I broke down and called Dell today. The tech was actually very nice, and I didn't have to argue my way into a new battery deal. It took an hour on the phone (including hold time), and I had to repeat steps I'd already done before calling, but... They are sending me a new battery! It should be here in 2-3 days.
I could only find one other site that has documented this problem: http://kniffen.ca/2007/01/19/dell-laptop-battery-bs/
It sounds like we have a new dell battery issue here. If any of you experience similar problems, I encourage you to post comments here, or at least post a link to your own site or similar sites. I would like to make an effort to get the word out about this new battery problem. This may be the start of yet another Dell battery recall.

ReplyDeleteI have Dell Latitude D620 that was purchased in August 2006. For the first few months, the battery life was OK. Just today, I received the dreaded message about my battery being "able to charge normally", etc.
ReplyDeleteI'll be looking for a replacement from Dell. I use the battery somewhat regularly, but 6 months is ridiculous, especially considering I use a second battery much of the time. It has not hit anywhere the recommended 300 charge-discharge cycles.
Not happy...
I found this blog a few days ago after a Google search since I was experiencing the same problem.
ReplyDeleteContacted Dell tech support on the March 6 using online chat --- explained the situation, then the tech rep said he'll send a replacement battery. Got it today.
Question to the others who got a replacement? Did Dell still ask for your old battery back?
In my case I think I have to return it, as I was provided a return shipping label.
You are out of luck if the computer is more than a year old. I purchased my inspiron 6000 in Nov 2005. In Oct 2006, they replaced my original battery due to the fire recall. Now it is Oct 2007 and I am getting that usable battery life message everyone else is seeing. I wonder if Dell intentionally did this so that they can recoop the cost of the recalled batteries. What better way to make money than to give you a bad battery and then you can purchase one in a year or less. I spoke with Dell Support and they say the batteries can last anywhere from 3 months to 1 year norm "depending on your usage", so now I am looking at spending about $200 every year to replace my battery.

My computer is less than 1 1/2 years old and I started getting this message. My battery had been lasting 2-4 hours unplugged then all of a sudden I began getting the "end of its usable life" (Dell inspiron 1545), now it can only be off charger 30 minutes. I think it is a way for Dell to make more money. Ridiculous!
